MUST-REMEMBER MOTORCYCLE SAFETY TIPS THIS SUMMER

For many individuals, summer is their favorite time of the year. Motorcycle riding is one of the most popular activities during the summer, especially in a place like Florida where you have plenty of things to see. However, before you jump on to your two-wheeled powerhouse this summer, here are some safety tips to remember:

  1. Make sure to get an inspection or have a once-over performed:

If you haven’t taken your bike out for a while, it is highly recommended that you have your motorcycle inspected or do a “once-over.”   That means, check out the tire tread, break and signal lights, air pressure, headlights etc.  It is also a good idea to go for an engine tune up if you haven’t had one performed for a while.

  1. Secure adequate insurance coverage for your motorcycle

Make sure you have adequate insurance for your motorcycle and that your motorcycle’s insurance has not lapsed. Many individuals often neglect this aspect and face a variety of troubles. If the insurance is lapsed, secure a new policy before taking your motorcycle on the road.   Also, talk to an insurance agent about securing uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage on your motorcycle.  There are many uninsured and underinsured motorists on the roadway.  Many drivers aren’t on the proper look out for motorcyclists and accidents can and do occur.  Having UM/UIM coverage can protect you if you are injured while riding a motorcycle.

  1. Get a refresher course

During summer, it is much better to take a refresher course especially if you haven’t ridden a bike for a long period of time. A refresher course will provide additional confidence to you when riding a bike. It will minimize the potential for accidents and help assure the safety of you and passengers.

  1. Be sure about the weather

In the summer, you cannot be 100% sure about the weather. So, be prepared if you intend to take your bike for a long-distance ride. See if forecast includes wind, rain and even extremely hot conditions.

  1. Maximize your visibility

As a rider, it is always important to be as visible as possible. Make sure to maintain an adequate distance with the vehicles on the road. The functionality of the lights of your motorcycle becomes exceptionally important in this case regardless of the time of the day. Also, purchase gear with bold colors and reflective stripes as they further make you clearly visible.   Also, wear appropriate safety gear to protect yourself.

  1. Ride with own limitations

Every rider is supposed to know their limits when they are riding a bike. That means, you should maintain proper speed, adequate distance and ride under the correct weather conditions. When it comes to a road trip or other long-distance trips, make sure that you have a Plan B in mind. Unexpected incidents are not that rare for a rider.

  1. Be respectful when riding

Don’t get too excited or tempted with the thrill you experience when riding a bike. Also, when you are in an open road, do not test your speed limits and potential biking skills.
